Bertha: Seen & Heard

The Horsfall, 87 Great Ancoats Street, Manchester

Published: 16 April 2018

Bertha: Seen & Heard is an exhibition and a week-long programme of events which will open the conversation about the history, challenges and successes of Manchester’s female curators, past, present and future.

This conversation is inspired by Bertha Hindshaw, who in 1912 became the first paid female curator of Thomas Horsfall’s Ancoats Art Museum.

106 years later, the impact of this important and yet unknown figure will be seen and heard by the public for the first time through discussions, performances and an exhibition, presented by the Institute of Cultural Practices at The University of Manchester in partnership with The Horsfall.

I am part of the exhibition team which will present an exhibition on these themes, working in partnership between The Horsfall and the Institute for Cultural Practices at The University of Manchester. As well as the exhibition, the project will also promote socially engaged art by facilitating participatory workshops for young people accessing established groups at 42nd Street, a Manchester charity that supports young people aged 11-25 with their emotional wellbeing and mental health.

The three workshops will encourage the participants to consider one of the central questions of Bertha: Seen & Heard - what does curation mean today - in the context of their own lives, and to explore identity and self-curation by taking part in an artistic activity.

The artwork produced by the participants during this process of exploration and discussion, will be exhibited and showcased in the Bertha: Seen & Heard exhibition and event programme.

Readers are welcome to attend our exhibition and follow our social media account to get more information.
