Oil on canvas
Allusion - Illusion series

Prior to the Covid19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns I became interested in making paintings that explicitly referenced the physical process of producing the work, such as the use of masking tape.
The pandemic threw things into disarray; new strands of work arose and while I continued to make both abstract and figurative work the ‘masking tape paintings’ were put on hold, somewhat forgotten.

Recently, I have re-visited this concept and have become enthused by the possibilities of working within more formal structures with an emphasis on edges and layering, and a heightened awareness of the subtleties of colour. At first glance the paintings look hard-edged and precise, but a closer inspection reveals a wonky, diy aesthetic.

These abstract works might recall something remembered or imagined; something just out of reach.
