EDITORIAL

The Axisweb Hardship Fund is now temporarily closed. Over the last few months we've helped support 110 artists with a combination of money diverted from our Awards programme and also our Gofundme page. The level of demand has been very high and we're sorry we can't help more of our members. We're still collecting donations however and will open up further rounds when funds permit.

We'd like to thank everyone that has applied and everyone who has donated to this important cause. The sense of community and support amongst our membership and from external friends and partners has been extremely humbling to us. #ArtistsSupportingArtists

With the negative effects of lockdown and the financial uncertainties that many of out members faced, we introduced the Hardship Fund and to date have provided support to 120 artists. From the feedback and messages we have received during this time, now more than ever, we recognise the importance of connecting with each other.

Prior to Covid-19 we started the redevelopment of our website. In light of the impact and the need to support artists, freelancers and creative practitioners, we've shifted focus for what was needed - a digital platform to facilitate collaboration, share knowledge and make connections.

Phase 1 of 'Community' will go live in BETA mode soon, and members will be invited to get involved.

Here what you can expect:

  • Follow people's work
  • Contribute an idea, skill or resource
  • Set-up or get involved in a meet-up or event
  • Connect and share with others in the 'Community'
  • Create, promote, deliver and monetise digital workshops and courses

Build and deliver your next course or workshop

We stand in solidarity with the Black community. We recognise there is still a lot to be done. As a small arts charity, we are currently processing what we can do to educate ourselves and improve our contribution to a greater diversity of voices within the arts. Here's a link to a document that is intended to serve as a resource for white people to deepen our anti-racism work. Document compiled by Sarah Sophie Flicker and Alyssa Klein in May 2020. #BlackLivesMatter

Our Artist of the Month for July 2020 is Vincent James. We talk to Vincent about his practice and influences.

"I’m Vincent James, an artist working in Todmorden, West Yorkshire and I make work based on objects appropriated from cartoons.  My work uses the props cartoon characters interact with and objects in the background.  I’m interested in the simplified language of these objects.  They are like the shorthand or idea of an object, easily recognised in the often fast pace of a cartoon."

We've recently launched a new podcast series called Live Out Loud, a collection of conversations between artists around a specific topic and hosted by our Research and Development Coordinator, Lucy Wright. Check out the latest episodes below:

You can also access these podcasts on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher and Google Podcasts!

For #Five2Watch this week we've selected five artists who have explored different kinds of value in their work: Sarah Spanton, Derek Couturier, Jo Evans, Julie McCalden and Chantal Powell.
