EDITORIAL

So how do artists afford the opportunity to fail? Failure is inescapable in a complex world, and the more we are in denial of that fact, the more we cling to bad ideas. Artists actively claim the space of failure. Most artists fail eventually - but that’s not a bad thing -  just an iteration in a process of seeking new, unexpected situations.

This month we highlight artists whose practice connects and with the idea of seeking new situations. Our Artist of the Month features Nikkita Morgan, an Irish political textile artist, Nikkita’s practice derives from her exploration in the North of Ireland’s troubling landscape.

As media partner for Tempting Failure 2018 - London’s Biennial of International Performance Art and Noise (9 July to 22 July 2018), we talk to founder and artist Thomas John Bacon about creating a space that could hold genuine risk, where if failure occured, the fact that the chance was taken was celebrated. Watch out for an Instagram Takeover during the Biennial.

Ellen Bell writes about her own very public investigation into the idea of creating the space to explore what she calls “stuckness”. Her practice and performance of sewing becoming both a manifestation of her stagnation and her relief.

We are also launching 48 Hour Micro Residency. A small bursary available to support member artists to undertake a time-based challenge of experimentation in one of our Vacant Spaces.
