EDITORIAL

We are proud to announce our Axisweb Awards 2020. The first two awards are now officially open! For more information on our R&D Bursary and our Project Commission see below.

To reflect the diversity and idiosyncratic nature of artists practice we have split our awards into several streams. Throughout 2020 we will make announcements when each Award stream is open - so make sure you stay tuned!

The Axisweb Research and Development Bursary seeks to support members in the evolution of ideas to support their artistic practice.

There will be three rounds of the R&D Bursary in 2020 supporting a total of six awards, two per round. Successful recipients each receive £500, access to advice and support from Axisweb staff / Trustees.

Deadline: 10:00am, 17 February 2020

The Axisweb Project Commission seeks to support members who require additional resources and support to develop and disseminate their ideas.

There will be two rounds of the Project Commission in 2020 supporting two awards, one per round. Successful recipients each receive £1,000 and access to advice and support from Axisweb staff / Trustees.

Deadline: 10:00am, 17 February 2020

Our Artist of the Month for February 2020 is Annette Jane Pugh. We talk to her about her practice which concerns the development of the photographic image and its relationship to drawing, painting and film.

We're proud to be part of 'Meanwhile in The North Consortium' along with East Street Arts, Skippko, The NewBridge Project and Castlefield Gallery. We're currently looking for an experienced freelance researcher and writer to help us produce a small publication. Deadline: 28 February 2020.

As the UK leaves the European Union we look at five artists whose works respond to or reference the turbulent political landscape in #Five2Watch. Nikkita Morgan, Russell Jakubowski, Imogen Millie Ellerby Sansom, Marc Renshaw and Lucy Wright

In this month's Playlist we present a selection of videos that feature 'barriers'. Featuring works by Featuring Jojo Taylor, Suki Chan, Megan Broadmeadow and Susan Williams MRBS.

New Art Highlights of the week includes Alice Briggs, Aimee Nelson, Stuart Robinson and Chantal Powell.

We have more copies of our Social Works?: Open for sale. Social Works?: Open speaks to the precariousness of socially engaged practice during an extended period of government-led cuts to arts funding across the UK, and the continued importance of maintaining and supporting a critical voice within socially engaged art.Contributors include: Jen Delos Reyes, Kerry Morrison, R.M. Sánchez-Camus, Claire Mead, They Are Here, Harvey Dimond, Lauren Velvick, Les Monaghan and Joe Cotgrave.

In our monthly What's On Guide we share events from our Axis Directory members that are happening in February.
