Words and silence
This month we catch up with our Micro-Commission artist Ro Hardaker who initially began researching forms of protest using sound but has since shifted focus in order to understand the importance of silence and listening.
"By collecting together primary, secondary and tertiary research I’ve been trying to allow myself to receive and listen, rather than focusing on creating, and to prepare myself to channel, rather than worrying about producing artistic output."
Axis is searching for a freelance communications specialist with experience in cultural, creative and / or media industry communications (this can include experience in; fashion, film, theatre, museum, heritage, or contemporary art) to join our small team at an arts charity committed to making a measurable positive impact for artists, communities and audiences.
We’re looking for a creative thinker with visual storytelling experience to help more people understand what makes Axis and its membership of artists stand out. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of how to plan, execute and measure marketing campaigns. You will help us celebrate, share and debate contemporary visual art by creating engaging content, using the latest technologies and tools to drive and create more engagement across our digital channels. With the support of the Social and Editorial teams, you will tap into cultural insights and develop social-first content in line with our brand and charitable objectives.
The deadline for applications is 9am, Monday 16 August 2021
Inspired by Ro Hardaker's Micro-Commission project 'invisible, without bodies', Five2Watch this week is all about artists who have used vocal performance within their work. Featuring work by: Laura Cooper, Rebecca Glover, Kirstin Leigh, Johana Hartwig and Armindokht Shooshtari.
We're currently putting the finishing touches to the second edition of our Social Works? Open publication which will be launched soon. Ahead of this, here's an introduction to the thirteen writers who have contributed their fantastic texts to the printed journal.
In addition to the print copies, we will also be launching an extended digital-only version of the journal on the Axis / Social Art Library sites, so watch this space to find out how to access all this exciting new content.
Social Works? Open is a Social Art Library project for Axis. Visit www.socialartlibrary.org for more information!
Writing is a difficult business at the best of times, but especially if you’re writing about your own work. In 2014 Louisa Buck shared her advice on how to write a good artist's statement. Check out the tips here.
