EDITORIAL

Our Artist of the Month for April 2020 is Jessica Wetherly. We talk to her about her artistic practice, influences and upcoming projects.

In light of the uncertainty artists face due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have introduced a Hardship Fund to help our members facing significant financial hardship and who are unable to work, disabled, a carer, on low income or freelance. As a small independent charity that does not receive public funding, we have initially made available a total fund of £5,000. Each week for five weeks we will distribute 10 x £100 awards. Round three is now open and will close Thursday 9 April 2020 at 4pm.

In the last two weeks we have received more than 400 applications for the Hardship Fund. This incredible response—representing over £30,000 that we could have given away—demonstrates the scale of need within our community. However, as a small charity, not in receipt of any public fuinding, we are sadly unable to help everyone.

Several members have been in touch to ask whether it’s possible to donate to the Hardship Fund to help us support more members of our artistic community. We are so touched by this generosity that we have decided to create a GoFundme page to help facilitate this and to match the £5,000 we've already committed. All donations will be added to our Hardship Fund, with every penny going to artists in need.

We know that many of you (like us!) may be struggling to balance the desire to stay occupied with serious levels of screen fatigue. In these uncertain times it’s often hard to turn away from our computers, televisions, phones and the continual stream of social media posts and news reports. In response, we’ve created Sunday Sounds, a collection of sound art, music, podcasts, readings, performances and conversations from our Members which will be published every Sunday evening at 6pm. The first Sunday Sound features 'The Sea and the Moon' by Mark Parry#SundaySounds

Are you a freelancer in the visual arts sector? We want to understand the impact of Arts Council England and HM Treasury's emergency sector support measures on the visual arts sector so we have this short survey for you to complete.

This research has been commissioned by CVAN in association with a-n The Artists Information Company, Artists' Union England, Artquest, Axisweb, Curatorspace, DACS, Engage and Guild, to inform how we deploy our capacity and resources over the challenging time ahead.

For #Five2Watch this week we've selected five artists who have made work surrounding notions of care, featuring: Blair Cunningham, Julieann Worrall Hood, Gail Howard, Robyn LeRoy-Evans and Carl Rowe.

In this week's Playlist we present a selection of videos by our our members that feature a conversation. Featuring Jo Ray, Bettina Furnee, Katy Beinart and Lyndsay Martin.
